Uniquely, Weirdly Incredibly Terrific: James the Seventh

Killer!!! Serious talent at work here. Born Bethany Latham, she transitioned from a promising ballet career to indie pop stardom after a debilitating injury. With over 41,500 monthly Spotify listeners, her atmospheric tracks blend alternative pop, rock, and harmonies, evoking Billie Eilish and Lorde.

Starting ballet at seven, she trained full-time by age 13, moving to Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre in her teens. Music lingered in the background via violin lessons and inspirations like MARINA and Lana Del Rey. In 2020, an ACL tear during COVID lockdown ended her dance dreams, sparking an identity crisis.

Gifted a guitar, she self-taught songwriting and production by late 2020. Her style explores trauma and emotion through poetic lyrics and “weird” sounds, influenced by The Beatles and collaborators like Oren Yoel.

Her discography includes EPs like Unsexy, Awkward, Mind Your Business, Crumble, and Trauma Olympics. Singles such as “Preoccupied” and “Babydoll” highlight her growth.

Here’s a gold medal for your issues

Mental gymnastics like an athlete
ya know I gotta give you first place – Fuckin’ first place
So congratulations for being a victim
Be the highest on the podium
But I don’t care who’s been training harder
I’m on your team so why are you competing?
T-t-t-trauma Olympics racing to the drama T-t-t-trauma
Here’s a trophy, show it to your mama T-t-t-trauma
I don’t give a fuck if you throw a punch
Everyone’s been through some shit
Figure skating on thin ice
Figure how to make the shoe fit
Bronze, silver, gold, pick your prize
While I’m running from you for miles
Be a good sport but competing works its way into the game of life
And I don’t care who’s more of the victim
Don’t you know everyone’s been through shit?
Don’t care who’s been training harder
I’m on your team so why are you competing?
