Communist Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass visited Cuba 15 times since 1973 many with the Cuban “Venceremos Brigade”

Karen Bass’s Misguided Cuban Adventure: A Flirtation with Communism in the 1970s

In 1973, a naive Karen Bass made a questionable choice that would raise eyebrows decades later: she joined the Venceremos Brigade, a group of American radicals who traveled to Cuba to cozy up to Fidel Castro’s regime. At just 20 years old, Bass hopped on this ideological joyride, claiming it was a chance for “personal and political growth.”

The Venceremos Brigade, formed in 1969, wasn’t just a cultural exchange program. It was a deliberate middle finger to U.S. policy, openly defying the trade embargo to fawn over Cuba’s so-called socialist paradise. She’s since framed the trip as a chance to “learn about Cuba’s socialist system and U.S. foreign policy.” But what exactly did she learn? That a one-party state with a knack for jailing dissidents and rationing basic goods was worth studying as a model?

Cuba in the 1970s wasn’t a utopia—it was a mess. While Bass was marveling at Havana’s state-run healthcare and education, Cubans were grappling with shortages, surveillance, and a regime that didn’t tolerate criticism. The Venceremos Brigade’s rose-colored glasses conveniently ignored the forced labor camps, the suppression of free speech, and the exodus of desperate citizens risking their lives to flee.

Bass has tried to spin this youthful indiscretion as a formative moment, a way to broaden her perspective on global politics. But her involvement with the brigade raises tough questions. Why align with a group that openly cheered for a regime hostile to American values?

Fast forward to today, and Karen Bass is the mayor of Los Angeles, a city with its own laundry list of problems—homelessness, crime, and economic strain. Her defenders might argue that her Cuban trip was a youthful misstep, irrelevant to her current role. But when you’re leading a major American city, your past choices matter. Bass’s willingness to dabble in the Venceremos Brigade’s pro-Castro activism suggests a troubling blind spot for authoritarianism, even if it’s dressed up in socialist rhetoric.

    1. Check out BASS’s history. Since the 70s she has been in a private Marxist group in cube, in addition she has been promoted to highest tier for completing Marxist chapters. Check it out for yourself

  2. There is a misconception regarding the political state of California. 20 years ago, CA was rather centered politically. The ultra liberals used to be mostly confined to Hollywood and SF / Silicon Valley. It’s not that the native Californians became more liberal overnight. The reality is the liberals now have the voting bloc to pass their agenda because of mass (mostly illegal) migration. It is rather disingenuous when people say that “we voted for this”. The reality is most of us (the real CA natives) did not. Our replacements did. Now the problem is exacerbated by the exodus of logical native Californians that see what has happened. I myself have considered leaving the state, but this is my home. My family has been here for more than a century.
